What is Matrix Coding?

Matrix coding (or cross-tabulation) is my favourite visualisation in NVivo. They allow you to display comparative patterns in your data. They can help you to compare:

  • Differences in coding across different demographic attributes (From your cases: see )

  • Words used in different contexts

  • Differences in attitude (See )

The Importance of the Research Question

As we delve deeper into visualisations and queries, it should become clear that the importance of your research question is paramount. There is a lot that you can do with queries, and it's important to keep in mind your research question when working with them.

Also, it should now be clear why we have emphasised a robust coding, case, and file structure, as all of these elements now work together to help you to create these visualisations. Your output is only ever going to be as good as your input when it comes to research with NVivo.

Task: Running a Matrix Coding Query

  1. Using the video above, run a matrix code query in NVivo comparing nodes to cases.

  2. Try to run a similar query but with multiple case attributes.

  3. Use the customisation functions to colour your cross-table to make your findings more apparent.
