Keeping Track of Your Research

In the SAGE Handbook of Social Media Research Methods, Voss et al. write that:

"...it is wise to assume that data are at risk and that, therefore, they need to be carefully curated and preserved to remain discoverable, accessible and of value to potential users." (2018)

Keeping track of your research data is a vital part of the research process. In this module, we'll be working through some of the ways in which NVivo can help you to keep track of your research data through memos, annotations, files classifications, and project maps.

Memos

Memos are a type of document in NVivo 12 designed to help you keep track of your research. They are a way of keeping your data and analysis separate but still contained within the same project file. You can use memos to record insights about nodes or files, or to just write down any thoughts that you might have of your research at the time.

This video introduces the various ways in which you can keep track of your research data in NVivo. Whilst these modules do not cover see also links - they are a great asset to your research. This section is about memos, but pay close attention to the annotations section of the video as well, as we'll be exploring that more in the next section.

Task: Creating Memos in NVivo

  1. Using this video as guidance, try to create a memo for:

    1. A Node

    2. A File

    3. On its Own

Bonus tasks: Try to create a see also link as well as a memo link

Each file or node can only have one memo linked to it, and that memo cannot be linked to another item.
