What are Hierarchy Charts?

There are two ways of visualising hierarchy charts in NVivo - as a tree map or a sunburst diagram. Both accomplish the same thing, and that is showing you the patterns that emerge at a structural level within your data. Hierarchy charts will show insights such as the proportion of coding that a node has, as well as the other nodes that are nested within it.

I found in my research that hierarchy charts were a great way to get a quick snapshot of my data which I could then use to kick-start the writing process for my analysis.

Video: Creating a Hierarchy Chart for Mac users

This is - as far as I know - the only part of the course where there is not an available video resource for Windows users on how to create a hierarchy chart in NVivo. Nor is there one for the latest Mac version, there is however, this video for Mac users on NVivo 11 - the process is very similar for NVivo 12.

Task: Creating a Hierachy Chart

  1. Navigate to the "explore" tab at the top of NVivo

  2. Create a hierarchy chart that visualises your coding in NVivo

This can also be accomplished by selecting the coding that you would like to visualise, right-clicking, and then use the "visualise" button that comes from the drop-down menu.
